Japan

Neon cities, temple towns and some of the best trains in the world. Easy to navigate, safe and endlessly varied.

When to go

Spring (late March to early May) and autumn (October to November) have the mildest weather and the famous blossom and foliage — and the biggest crowds. Summer is hot and humid; winter is cold but clear and quiet.

Getting around

Trains are fast and punctual. Since the 2023 price rise, a nationwide Japan Rail Pass only pays off for long routes; for most first trips, individual shinkansen tickets plus an IC card (Suica or ICOCA) are simpler.
